The Medico-Legal Society of Toronto was founded in 1950 by doctors and lawyers to promote medical, legal and scientific knowledge, cooperation and understanding between the professions in the interest of justice and the best interests of patients and clients.


AWARDS – NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN!

It is time, once again, to consider nominating an individual for an MLST Award. Below are the three awards, their criteria, and links to the respective nomination forms.

We invite you to take a moment to recognize a colleague whose work has made a meaningful impact in the medico-legal community. Submit a nomination and help celebrate excellence within our profession.

THE MEDICO-LEGAL SOCIETY OF TORONTO AWARD
The Medico-Legal Society of Toronto Award is the highest expression of esteem that the Society can convey to a recipient.

CRITERIA: This award honours members of the healthcare, legal, or scientific community who have made a significant contribution to their profession, the Society, or the community at large, and whose contributions are consistent with the Society's values.

Note: The Society alternates annually between healthcare and legal professionals. This year, nominations are open to healthcare professionals.

    THE MLST DR. GRANT FARROW AWARD
    The MLST Dr. Grant Farrow Award was created in honour of Dr. Grant Farrow, who was a long-standing member of the Society and a renowned urological surgeon and teacher. He exemplified the Society's best traditions, including professional excellence, civility, and collegiality between the healthcare and legal professions.

    CRITERIA: This award recognizes a young or mid-career member of the Society for outstanding contributions to the Society, their profession, or the community at large. The professional must be a member of the Medico-Legal Society and in good standing for a minimum of 2 years. The professional must be in their early or mid-career. It shall be in the discretion of the Awards Committee to decide whether a professional is mid-career, with this determination being loosely defined as the first half of the professional’s career.

    Note: The Society alternates annually between healthcare and legal professionals. This year, nominations are open to legal professionals.

      THE MLST PHILIPPA SAMWORTH AWARD
      The MLST Philippa Samworth Award was created in honour of one of the Society’s members of the legal community, Ms. Philippa Samworth. Ms. Samworth has earned a stellar reputation in the insurance defence and personal injury bar as a fierce advocate for her clients. She is known for her razor-sharp mind, her enthusiastic passion for justice and fairness, and her untiring willingness to share her knowledge with colleagues on both the plaintiff and defence sides. Her countless contributions to the MLST are unmatched by any member, as is her outstanding dedication and commitment to the Society over several decades.

      CRITERIA: This award recognizes an MLST member for sustained superb dedication and commitment to the Society and to its objectives of advancing medico-legal knowledge for the benefit of both the healthcare and legal professions and in the interests of patients, clients, and justice.

      Note: The Society has no obligation or requirement to confer the award under MLST in any fiscal year.

      The award recipients will be announced at the Annual General Meeting and Awards Dinner held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) -20 Toronto Street., 2nd Floor, Toronto. Ontario.  Nomination deadline: Nominations must be received by the MLST office no later than 5:00 pm Wednesday, April 15, 2026
